Returning Home: Ayush Maskey’s Odyssey

Ayush Maskey is a Customer Relationship Manager at Alaya. This story tells of his intention to return to home country and the impact he had once he did.

I left Nepal with a hunger. A hunger for knowledge, for experience, for a life I couldn’t yet imagine. Australia served as the stage where I brought my dreams to life. I went there to study information systems and experience a culture vastly different from my own. I wanted to see how far I could stretch, how much I could learn. Over a decade, I threw myself into every opportunity that came my way. From the early mornings spent crafting the perfect cup of coffee to the late nights behind a bar, from the challenges of customer service to the thrill of closing sales, from the intricacies of IT projects to the responsibilities of managing stores. Each task, every difficulty, made me better.

When the time came, the decision to return to Nepal was like standing at the edge of a cliff, knowing I had to jump but not knowing if I’d fly. The pull of home, of family, became a beacon, which grew brighter as the world grappled with the uncertainty of a pandemic. The thought of extending my stay abroad lingered, but the call of familial commitments and the comfort of home soil grew too strong to ignore. Transitioning back to Nepal wasn’t easy. The years away had taught me to value individualism, a stark contrast to the communal culture of Nepali society. Fortunately, the advancements in digital services helped ease the transition, but adapting to life’s pace and how people interact back at home took real work.

Despite these hurdles, my return to Nepal marked the beginning of a chapter filled with accomplishments. The Manager’s Trainee program forged me into a leader, ready to take the helm of the Customer Relationship Team. I led us past our targets to new highs. Winning the “Calmer Of Storm – Leadership Award 2023 – Mortgage Division” showed the change I could bring to Nepal’s work scene. A 95% completion percentage in the Customer Relationship Department wasn’t just a stat, it showed that the lessons I learned abroad could have a positive impact at home.

My story goes beyond professional wins, however, it’s about the strength in returning home. It’s about adapting, growing and making an impact. I brought back experiences, skills and fresh views to make a real difference. I am proud that I have a chance to give back, change and succeed where it all started.
